Word Processing as a Literacy Tool

Word Processing's Hidden Tools

Highlight Text with MS Word & Neo-Office!
Just as with a highlighter and a regular piece of paper, students can easily use the highligher tool within world processing programs to identifiy key text.

How does it work in the classroom?
When students are trying to learn new vocabulary words and/or come across new words in a web page, being able to copy-and-paste into a word processing program becomes an important tool. Within the word processing program the student can 'speak to the text' in a variey of formats. Below I show you how to use the highlighting tool and 'callouts' for marking text.

VIDEO: Activate the highlight too

MS Word: enable the highlighting through the tool pallet (if not already enabled). This is quite similar in Neo-Office.

Customize the highlighter tool!

Add 2 highlight panels to your toolbar to make it easy to use two different highlighter colors without having to click to change colors!!

FIND a word within a Safari browser window!

Safari's Built-in Dictionary Tool Safari has a built-in dictionary tool that allows the user to click and view a pop-up dictionary definition of a word. Please note that the dictionary is a high-lexile level dictionary. Students with low vocabulary skills are likely to struggle with the definitions.
